What does it take to deliver a digital workplace?
There’s been more focus on creating the digital workplace given recent world events. And more of us find ourselves working from home for the first time. But with it brings some challenges for businesses, especially in terms of the underlying IT changes required to achieve it. Our opening to this O2 blog highlights, ‘digital workplace’ is not just about technology, it’s a business strategy.

Let’s get people connected, securely
We had already identified that digital connectivity could increase productivity and growth on a national scale. In the UK alone, our Business without boundaries report found an increase in smarter working had led to a £10.5 billion productivity boost.
Although today’s focus is on supporting the business need today. There’s almost certainly going to be a shift to seeing how organisations can change their working environments for the future. According to the report, large and small companies could see a total productivity gain of £34.1 billion from a digitally enabled workforce. Equivalent to an extra 18 working days per person, per year.
Yet productivity is just one of the gains from the digital workplace. As our infographic shows, there are other outcomes too, such as collaboration and communication, choice and security.
The headline gains from digital collaboration and communication are fairly obvious. Less time spent on admin, more time for work. New ideas shared quickly and improved upon across borders. Costs savings from reduced travel to meetings. Face to face business contact will always be essential in most organisations, but it’s offering the blend created by the digital workplace is where businesses will get the most benefit in the future.
For an increasing number of customers their strategic approach when rolling out mobile devices is in the new world of Office365 taking advantage of Microsoft’s inbuilt collaboration tools such as MS Teams allowing real time use of video /voice and file sharing.
Within O2, we have deployed this strategy and have 6800 users collaborating with 150k messages sent daily and in excess of 7400 meeting participants per day. As this is a cloud service is we are scaling up usage during the uncertainty of COVID-19 to fully support our people working flexibly.
For other customers It could be as simple as your people working together with O2 Just Call Me and using the mobile number as the conference bridge instead of wasting time logging into complex conference calls
The defining characteristic of almost any workplace is the people. And this won’t change despite the drive to digitisation. Attracting and keeping staff is essential. More so now that the workforce is made up of five different generations – each of which expects different things.
As with any discussion involving digital, security remains a top priority. And while some still hold on to the ‘Castle and Moat’ approach, many are realising this is no longer fit for purpose. Assuming everything in your ‘castle’ is safe because you have built a ‘moat’ – or collection of defences – around it ignores new threats. Now that your people can connect from anywhere, the notion of the castle disappears. And with it the safeguard of the traditional moat.

They are asked to verify themselves to gain access, whether on or off the corporate network.
