Samsung takes you from 5G-ready to foldable phones for business
Maria Fernandez, SMB Sales Director at O2, explains why it’s no surprise business users are getting excited by Samsung’s new devices.
It’s no secret that I like to spend time away from my screens when I can. But I also love to see the latest tech and what it can do. So I was delighted to be asked to review not just one new smartphone but two.
First up there’s the all-new Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G (launching on the 13th March) available in grey or black with 128GB or just grey with 512GB. As the name suggests, this powerful device is designed to take advantage of everything 5G has to offer and is part of a family of 4 devices; the Samsung S20 5G; Samsung S20+ 5G, Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G and the Samsung Galaxy S20 4G version.
Then it’s on to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip (launching on the 14th February) – a smartphone that features a foldable screen. Yes, you read that correctly: a foldable screen. While that might be exciting enough on its own, I was told there were plenty of other features to explore.
Here’s what I think business users will love to know about what lies beneath the shiny exterior of this new tech.
4 things you’ll love about the Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G
1. You can trust it for work
I’ve always liked the look of Samsung smartphones and this one comes in a choice of black or sleek grey. But the specs are just as exciting as the designs. Having the S20’s intelligent battery powering multiple apps meant it kept on going and going. It even learned my routines so it was easier to switch between my top tasks. As for handling sensitive information, it seems it’s got that covered too with defence-grade security.
2. It’ll help you to be even more productive
Smartphone storage has always been a bit of a bugbear for me. Especially if you use your phone at work and at home. So I was pleased to see the S20 family comes in two different sizes – 128GB and a huge 512GB (obviously for people like me). I really liked the Samsung DeX too. It’s just amazing to be able to connect to a monitor (and keyboard or mouse for that matter). DeX turned the S20 Ultra 5G into a kind of PC so I could pick up documents exactly where I left off.
3. It’s on the money for modern-day business
Samsung promises this smartphone is ready for business and it’s not wrong. There’s easy access to all your favourite work apps so you can create documents or track your budgets. I’d never really got into QR codes before but the S20 Ultra 5G lets you create QR business cards – which have come in really handy at events. And there’s even a high-quality camera.
4. It’s ready for 5G
This is really big as 5G will genuinely change how we all work. On the O2 network alone it’s already live in 21 towns and cities1. With plans to roll out 50 by summer 2020. This means that, once O2 5G is available in your area, with this device, a new 5G tariff, and a 5G sim, you can benefit from a better and more reliable connection in extra busy places, delay-free downloads and buffer-free streaming. O2 5G will unlock new experiences and increase productivity around all the things that matter most, so you can transform your business and live life without wasting a moment.
The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G certainly delivers four big benefits. But another part of me was entranced by the idea of the foldable Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. Would all the other features stack up though?
4 things you need to know about the Galaxy Z Flip
1. It folds in half
Seriously! The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is the first in the world to feature a flexible 6.7” FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED display. I’m sure these descriptors are important but can I just remind you that it folds… Not only that, but it has an edge-to-edge screen with no home button (and only a tiny camera dot). What this means for business users like me is that it’s easy to see the detail in documents. And then you can fold it back in half to fit easily into your bag.
2. It’s different to anything else in the office
Samsung claims this is the kind of smartphone that’s going to help you stand out in a crowd. I’d have to agree it really does appeal to my aesthetic side. The sleek, minimal lines and distinctive purple colour palette makes it unlike any other phone out there at the moment (and is also available in black).
3. It packs a punch
It’s fair to say that the Galaxy Z Flip shouldn’t be seen as just another accessory. Running along in the background is Samsung’s Snapdragon 855+ chipset – a super-efficient processor that gets things done in a flash. The fast-charging battery is a real bonus too. Especially as it works wirelessly. And that means you can help out a colleague with a compatible smartphone using PowerShare.
4. It’s got a creative streak
My typical day involves lots of meetings, documents and sales figures*. But for many, business means being creative. From photographers trying to capture the world the way they see it to content curators looking for the next viral success, the Galaxy Z Flip has all the technical wizardry required. Dual aperture to adjust to any light? Check. A Super Steady video feature so you can shoot on the move? Check. Clever editing modes? Check. It’s all in there.
* I’m fine with this, by the way.
So there you have it. Two new Samsung smartphones. Eight big benefits for business users. And lots to get excited about.
