Does sustainability have to be a challenge?
By O2 Business
Sustainability is fast moving from a ‘nice-to-have’ to an essential part of corporate culture. Need convincing? Management consultants McKinsey have released a report outlining several key areas where sustainability policies can provide significant economic benefits:
- Risk management – reputation, regulatory and operational risk management
- Growth – new markets, innovation and new products
- Return on capital – sustainable operations, value chains and green sales and marketing.
The report highlights how most of the companies surveyed started their sustainable journey by looking to improve how they managed their natural resources – and found new efficiencies as part of the process. For instance, the report highlights how Bayer developed a resource-efficiency check to improve operations by using by-products and reducing waste water which is leading to expected savings of more than $10 million a year. Other triggers or reasons companies had for starting their sustainable journey included looking to mitigate long term risks (whether reputational risks or to avoid regulatory) or to find ways to innovate their products and processes.
How O2 can help
Increasing sustainability for ourselves and our customers is something we’re working hard to achieve at O2, and we’ve identified our own key areas where we can help. We’re already setting industry standards as the first mobile telecoms company to receive the Carbon Trust Triple Standard for carbon, waste and water.
One resource that’s key to the idea of sustainability is mobile technology. It’s estimated that there are 50-90 million handsets lying in drawers and cupboards in the UK not being used. That’s a waste. Luckily, O2 has a solution – O2 Recycle. Our award-winning service allows you to trade in your unwanted handsets, making sustainability easy; it’s fast, free, secure and we’ll actually pay you for your old technology – in 2016 the average price we paid per device was £71.
Also at O2 we want to help businesses to Think Big about ‘going green’ and we can help make it easy and beneficial to your organisation and your people. Whether it’s through O2 Recycle, going paperless or digital transformation, we have the solutions and experience to help.
