MWC 2017 – Huawei P10 review

Huawei has just unveiled its brand new flagship, the Huawei P10, at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The newly announced P10 is Huawei’s flagship for 2017 bringing a refined design, improved camera and newly integrated fingerprint scanner.

An advance on last year’s P9, the P10 is a very neatly pocketable phone. At just 7mm thin, with a 5.1-inch Full HD display, the all-metal P10 is an accessible size for big and small hands alike. With its Hyper Diamond-cut back panel in blue, or blasted metal in black and silver, it also feels rich in the hand.

With an incredibly fast fingerprint scanner below the screen, the P10 is biometrically protected. The scanner also supports gestures, replacing the navigation keys usually at the bottom of your Android smartphone screen. This frees up more of the display for your content, so emails, documents and photos take centre stage.

Other specs include a top-of-the-line Kirin 960 processor with 4GB RAM and an ample 64GB storage. The 3200mAh battery also supports SuperCharge technology, so offers one day of use from 30 minutes of charge time so you’ll never be caught out.

Dual camera

But the big story is the dual camera around the back. Made in collaboration with Leica, it features two 28mm lenses but there’s no bump in casing – it’s flush throughout. Between them the two lenses boast a total of 32 megapixels (the monochrome one has 20, while the colour lens has 12) and they’re able to capture perspective information, enabling advanced portrait features and plenty of detail.

The idea is that the phone will overlay the black-and-white image on the colour one, offering more detail, sharpness and contrast to your images.

The P10 also shoots 4K video and has optical image stabilisation to minimise handshake blur in your photos and video. There’s also an 8 megapixel camera on the front, also with optics and sensor by Leica.

Other announcements from Huawei included a larger variant of the P10, the P10 Plus with a bigger screen, more storage and improved multimedia capabilities, as well as the 4G-capable Huawei Watch 2.
