’Bake Off’ with the England Rugby team

By Carmen Cuadra Gómez, Public Sector Marketing Manager, O2

A couple of weeks ago we announced the extension of the O2 and the RFU partnership to September 2021. We’ve stood alongside the England Rugby team through the wins and defeats,, through harsh winters and warm(ish) summers. We’ve proudly worn the rose for 21 years.

To celebrate this great partnership, and as part of our Blue Door events series, we invited more than 50 of our enterprise customers, to join us and 15 of the England Rugby squad for an afternoon of Sunday family fun at Pennyhill Park on 6th November. The players took our customers and guests through life as a professional rugby player, and their thoughts ahead of the Old Mutual Wealth Series, and their first game against South Africa which took place on November 12th.

After their incredible and inspiring performance at this year’s RBS 6 Nations, which crowned them winners for the first time since 2011, the team (now ranked second in the world) are very clear on the their next steps to success. Chris Robshaw made the point of saying that the team realise they’re not in a position become number one just yet, but that is certainly the goal, with all roads ultimately leading to Japan 2019.

Guests then enjoyed a tour of the Mitsubishi Motors England Rugby Training Centre , a unique opportunity not only to see the outdoor grounds but also the state of the art indoor facilities where the players give blood, sweat and tears on the training field to make us proud.

The day culminated with a very special surprise (for us all), where in true ‘Bake Off’ style, guests and players fought it out in a cupcake decorating competition. The judges included a professional chef, Sean Wilson (a.k.a. Martin Platt from Coronation Street) and Sky Sports News presenter Alex Payne gave scores out of 10 to the 15 tables. Dave Attwood’s table won, which also happened to be the table yours truly was hosting, providing some light hearted entertainment at the end of a great day.

How the England team will perform across the Old Mutual Wealth Series remains to be seen but I’m optimistic given the triumphant first win against South Africa at the weekend. Get in touch with me on Twitter and let me know your thoughts. @carmen_cuadra
