Digital Communities: Week 3 Overview
by O2 Business
This week, as part of the Digital Communities project in St Helens, we were lucky enough to be joined by O2’s Think Big team. This was ideal for half-term week as Think Big aims to inspire and support young people (13-25 year olds) with great ideas. It’s all about how they can have a positive impact within communities, while also giving them the opportunity to get the hands-on experience and skills they need to thrive in today’s digital world.
Throughout the week, we promoted the Think Big grants available to young people. O2 and Think Big have teamed up with St Helens Council and St Helens Chamber to give 60 grants of £300 to people in St Helens aged 13-25 to lead projects using digital for social good. Visit the website if you, or someone you know, has an idea that could help your community or the environment.
The next session looked at how to create films using a smartphone. Attendees were shown how to record, upload, crop and edit video clips from their phone to create short films. Some really got the hang of it and were able to include audio too – one girl even came back on the Friday to finish off her project. Both sessions were invaluable in teaching young people the digital skills they will need in the modern workplace.
On Thursday, senior O2 Business employees and local young people met in the hub for a Work Ready session. The O2 team introduced themselves, explained their roles, shared their workplace experiences and offered some career advice. For young people looking for more help after the session, the GoThinkBig website offers a wide range of career support. 13-25 year olds can learn how to show off their skills in interview, use an anonymous CV feedback service and also search job vacancies.
Kerry North, O2 Senior Community Manager, said: “The Digital Hub was buzzing as members of the Enterprise Leadership Team offered advice and support to 16-18 years olds as part of the Work Ready programme. The O2 team also awarded five Think Big grants of £300 to support the first ever Think Big projects in St Helens. It really highlighted how our people, Think Big initiatives and digital technology can make a positive difference to the lives of young people in the area.”
We’ll look back at week 4 next Monday. As always, to find out more about upcoming events and how to get involved follow #HelloStHelens or visit the website.
