Does cyber security keep you awake at night?
by Mark Cox: Managing Partner: Technology and Industry, Telefónica UK
I often ask my customers “what keeps you awake at night?”
We’re seeing a dramatic rise in the number of newsworthy data breaches and cyber security attacks. But it’s only the tip of the iceberg. These types of attacks happen on a daily basis and they are going to continue. If the proverbial ‘bad guy wants to ‘get you,’ they will probably succeed. Why? Simply put, because the ‘bad guy’ is always one-step ahead. The ‘bad guy’ is often a group of intelligent and skilled individuals who are calculated and meticulous.
Perhaps it’s not surprising that when I ask my customers “what keeps you awake at night?” the answer that comes back time and time again is cyber security.
Nobody wants to be the next headline.
In today’s business environment, we rely on a range of smartphones, laptops and tablets to do our jobs effectively. Although productivity gains are clear, the potential security risks can be cause for concern. Just think – what do you use your phone for? Accessing the corporate network? Emails? File sharing? Social media? Online banking? Google Maps? All the while you are generating information on who you are and what you do that would interest hackers.
If a breach happens, the damage can be devastating. Fines can be in the millions, reputations can be ruined and customer confidence can be irreparably reduced.
So what can you do about it?
Actionable intelligence, not just intelligence, is the answer.
If I tell you that burglaries happening in your neighbourhood, that’s intelligence. But what if I tell you that the burglar committing these offences is called Joe Bloggs. He lives at 123 Generic Street and will break into your house on Monday at 12:31, coming through the kitchen door to target the expensive watch you keep on the left-hand bedside table. That’s actionable intelligence. It’s information you can do something about.
Detect, respond, protect.
So how do you get actionable intelligence? Well, visibility is essential. Through our strategic networks, we can offer a Security Incident and Event Management (SIEM) solution, combined with Threat Intelligence. This helps customers collect information so they can respond to threats as soon as possible.
And let’s not forget about devices. Many organisations will have a Mobile Device Management (MDM) solution, but this will not stop a crafted, specifically targeted cyber-attack. We can offer Capsule which will protect your devices using the latest malware protection wherever you are, however you connect.
It’s a scary world right? But with the right security solutions in place, you can still get a good night’s sleep.
